A choice, a tragedy, and life-altering consequences…

When Rena Dunigan flees New York City and her dream of becoming a Broadway performer, she returns to her hometown harboring a life-altering secret and the shame of a shattered past. When her friend talks her into helping build a house through the local Shelter the Homeless program, Rena meets Cody and his mischievous Saint Bernard. Cody is dealing with a devastating loss of his own, yet his gentleness and patience melt Rena's resolve never to trust—or to love—again.

But what will Cody think when he learns the consequences of Rena's past? Will he reject her, or can she trust that love will heal hurting hearts and forever bind them together?

“Broken Together” is the song by Christian recording artists Casting Crowns that comes to mind when I think of the stories of the main characters Rena and Cody in Mary Manner’s book “Light the Fire.”

My takeaway from this book is simple: Broken people need God…and each other. Author Mary Manners proves it in this beautiful, fictional story about friendship and two main characters, both brokenhearted who find true love and come to know the God who restores.

Readers meet the heroine, Rena, on the first page of Chapter 1 and learn that Rena is talented in the area of home improvement so much so that her dad bought a tool belt for her 16th birthday. As we turn the pages, we find sooner than later that Rena’s heart was shattered by two very traumatic events that happened not so long ago in her life and she’s shut the door to romance. Shut it tight. She refuses to date anyone, not matter how cute or considerate the guy is which is why Rena does not give Cody a chance when he enters her life.

Cody is the hero of this story. He’s cute, considerate and interested in Rena. But he’s not interested in the conquest kind of way. He’s interested in finding out the reasons for her not ordinary behavior when he tries to hold a conversation with her or ask her out on a date. Cody genuinely cares about Rena and wants to help—and protect—Rena’s heart. As the story progresses, he sees that Rena is wounded and as a person who’s been wounded by a death in his family, some of Rena’s pain resonates with him even though he does not know the details of her story and will not until the very last chapters of this book.

Oh but when they push past the pain, the love story between Rena and Cody is so sweet. The author knows how to take two wounded characters and make something beautiful out of their brokenness which is honestly what God does in real-life too!

I love reading books by Mary Manners and this one “Light the Fire” was no exception! There were only a few places where I lost interest but the plot soon drew me back in. Overall it’s a great read and I believe if you’re suffering from a deep wound, God can use this book written by Ms. Manners to start your healing process. But I must say the BEST book to find healing in is God’s Word, The Holy Bible. Just saying. :)

I can’t wait to read more books by this author!

Light the Fire edition by Mary Manners Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Light the Fire is the second book that I have read by Mary Manners and it was oh so good! This contemporary fiction novel deals with some deep hurts, trust issues and guilt burdens that would make you think it would be a very heavy and dark book. But that is just not the case. The author has done a fantastic job of writing characters that I just couldn’t help but love and she weaves in lighthearted moments that balance out the heavy ones.

Rena is the main female character in Light the Fire. This woman is carrying around an abundance of guilt and pain from events in her past. She works hard to help others, but feels that she is not worthy of happiness and struggles with the idea that anyone, including God, could forgive her when she cannot forgive herself.

Cody is the main male character in the book. He is a strong man in many ways. He is dedicated to being there for his late brother’s widow and sons, he loves God, and as he gets to know Rena, he is patient with her even though he doesn’t know the exact burden she carries.

This book was very hard to put down and impossible to stop thinking about when I wasn’t reading it! I loved the characters, the plot and basically everything about the book. I would highly recommend it to fans of contemporary Christian fiction.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from White Rose Publishing through The Book Club Network in exchange for an honest review, which I have given.
After reading Buried Treasures and now Light The Fire, I have found another great author. Mary Manners writes a great story of struggles that everyday people might go through. A story of guilt, tragedy, distrust, romance and forgiveness. Her characters are well written. Once I started reading this book it was hard to put down.
Wanting a different life, Rena has left her hometown, without her parents consent, for New York City. Having made some bad decisions she is suffering the consequences of heartache and pain, guilt and distrust and feels she does not deserve any happiness. Her parents have refused to support her in any way.
Cody is struggling with the death of his brother and burdened with guilt. He is dedicated to helping his brother's wife and children.
After Rena returns home she and Cody meet at a construction project for the homeless. Cody is attracted to Rena but she does not trust him or any man and pushes him away. Cody realizes she is carrying a heavy burden and is patient with her as he tries to find out what has happened in her life. When he finds out will he be able to forgive her? Can Rena forgive herself and Cody himself? What happens to Rena and her parents relationship?.
A story that tells us of God's love and forgiveness no matter what we have done, if we seek Him.
I recommend this book.
